2016 Munich-Vienna Middle East Summer School

The 2016 Middle East Summer School took place from 3-26 August 2016. The three-and-a-half-week program brought 13 students and young professionals from eleven different countries to Munich and, for a four-day field trip, to Vienna.

Students visited for briefings among others the headquarters of OPEC, the KAICIID Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue Center, and the United Nations Office in Vienna.

EU-Turkey Relations

Ludwig Schulz together with Alexander Knipperts (German International Cooperation) and other experts on Turkey contributed to the multi-scenario study "European Union and the World 2025" on the future of relations between the EU and strategic partners and neighbors, published by the Dahrendorf Forum, a joint initative of Hertie School of Governance, London School of Economics and Stiftung Mercator. The study is based on a two-days workshop on strategic scenario building techniques, headed by Randolph H. Pherson (Globalytica) and Oliver Gnad (GIZ). The scenario on Turkey and Turkey-EU relations 2025 developed by Mr. Knipperts and Mr. Schulz is characterised by an increasingly autocratic and geopolitically emboldened Turkey turning the tables on a disintegrating European Union (pp. 37-39).

2nd Strategic Gulf Conference

Michael Bauer and Dr. René Rieger each gave a talk at the 2nd Strategic Gulf Conference in Manama, Bahrain. Mr. Bauer's talk focussed on Germany's Middle East and Gulf policies, Dr. Rieger's contributed an analysis of the asymmetry of training, weaponry, and tactics between DAESH affiliates and European law enforcement. During the conference, Mr. Bauer and Dr. Rieger gave interviews to Bahraini media outlets including the Gulf Daily News.

Verification trip to Southeast Turkey

From 11 to 18 April 2016, Michael Bauer and Ludwig Schulz were invited by the Hasan Kalyoncu University in Gaziantep to a conference and finding mission in the Turkish provinces of Gaziantep and Kilis. The foci of the trip were the professional exchange with researchers and practitioners on various topics as well as the first-hand information on aspects and problems related to the Syria conflict and the state of affairs of the refugee crisis in Turkey.
